Lagos, Nigeria – Pascal Dozie, the visionary entrepreneur who shaped Nigeria’s banking and telecommunications sectors, has died at the age of 85. His passing was confirmed in a family statement issued by his son, Uzoma Dozie, on 8 April.
“With deep sorrow, yet gratitude to God for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our beloved father,” the statement read. “He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith. His life was defined by service—to God, his family, and his nation.”
A Banking Pioneer
Dozie was best known as the founder of Diamond Bank, which he established in 1990 and led until his retirement. Under his leadership, the bank became one of Nigeria’s most innovative financial institutions before its merger with Access Bank in 2019. His son, Uzoma, succeeded him as CEO and steered the bank through the merger.
Architect of Nigeria’s Telecom Boom
Beyond banking, Dozie played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s telecommunications revolution. As the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, he guided the company through its formative years following the sector’s liberalization in the early 2000s. His leadership helped MTN grow into Nigeria’s largest mobile network, driving the country’s digital transformation.
A Legacy of Excellence
Born on 9 April 1939 in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Dozie earned a degree in economics from the London School of Economics and a master’s in administrative science from City University, London. Renowned for his humility, integrity, and foresight, he received national acclaim, including the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
A revered boardroom leader, Dozie served on numerous corporate and public boards, influencing Nigeria’s corporate governance landscape during its economic liberalization era.
He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, his children,
grandchildren, and countless individuals inspired by his legacy. Funeral
