Former Super Eagles Coach Christian Chukwu Passes Away at 74

Renowned Nigerian football legend and former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has died at the age of 74. The sad news was confirmed by his longtime teammate and friend, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami.

Chukwu, affectionately called "Chairman", passed away on Saturday, though further details surrounding his death remain unclear at this time.

Odegbami, who lifted the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Chukwu, shared an emotional tribute:

“I just received the heartbreaking news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR—my bosom friend, teammate, and one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers—has left us. Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, broke the sad news to me. May ‘Onyim’ find eternal rest with our Creator, and may his family be comforted.”

This tragic loss comes three years after false reports of Chukwu’s death circulated in 2021, which the legendary coach debunked during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4 of that year. At the time, he expressed frustration, saying:

“I am deeply embarrassed by this news claiming I am dead. Since the rumor started, I’ve received countless calls from around the world. I am still trying to trace the origin of this story.”

Chukwu’s legacy in Nigerian football is indelible—both as a commanding player and a respected coach. His contributions to the sport continue to inspire generations.
