Colombian President Gustavo Petro Bows to Trump’s Tariff Threat, Offers Plane for Migrant Repatriation

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has reversed his stance on migrant deportations after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed severe trade and travel restrictions. Petro announced Sunday that his presidential plane would be used to repatriate Colombian migrants deported from the United States.

Trump’s Tariff Pressure Forces Petro’s U-Turn

Petro's decision follows Trump's implementation of a 25% tariff on Colombian imports, with a planned increase to 50% within a week. The U.S. also imposed a travel ban and visa restrictions on Colombian officials, with Trump warning that further actions were imminent.

“This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular,” Trump posted on Truth Social, slamming Petro’s initial refusal to accept deportation flights.

Petro had initially resisted, demanding the U.S. establish a protocol for the "dignified treatment" of migrants before accepting their return. "I deny the entry of American planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory," he declared.

However, facing mounting economic pressure, Petro reversed course, stating that his government would use the presidential plane to ensure a "dignified return" for deported Colombians.

Escalating Trade Tensions

In response to Trump’s tariffs, Petro ordered reciprocal measures, imposing a 25% tariff on U.S. imports to Colombia—later escalating it to 50%. He urged Colombian businesses to reduce dependence on the U.S. market.

“The ministry should direct our exports to the world—except the U.S.,” Petro posted.

As tensions rise, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson voiced support for Trump’s policies, warning that Congress would back further sanctions.

"Colombia and all nations should be on notice," Johnson stated. "President Trump is putting America first, just as he said he would."
