Nigeria Music Icon, Onyeka Onwenu Dies At 72

 


Legendary Nigerian singer, politician, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. Our reporters present at the scene reported that she collapsed after delivering an impressive performance at Stella Okoli's birthday party in Lagos on Tuesday. She was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.


Speaking to Channels Television, Muhammed Ahlim, the spokesperson for the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN)—the organization to which the late singer belonged—confirmed the news. He stated, "Yes, it is true. But we are yet to get an official statement from the family."


Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s. She released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981 and went on to produce numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.” Onwenu also starred in several Nollywood films and received numerous awards for her contributions to music and film, solidifying her status as a pioneer of Nigerian music.


Beyond her entertainment career, Onwenu was active in politics. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, and in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.


Onwenu’s significant contributions to Nigerian society were recognized in 2011 when she was awarded the National Honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
